'Salem's Lot

Image
The first Stephen King novel I ever read was Misery . I read it the summer before my Freshman year of high school as a summer reading project and I became obsessed. During my teen years I read basically every King novel I could get my hands on and ‘ Salem’s Lot quickly emerged as my favorite. That’s why, when picking my first novel to cover on the blog, ‘ Salem’s Lot was an easy choice.  ‘Salem’s Lot was published in 1975 and was King’s second published novel ( Carrie was the first). ‘Salem’s Lot received positive critical reception and King himself has described it on more than one occasion as his favorite of his own work. ‘Salem’s Lot takes place in the fictional town of Jerusalem’s Lot, Maine. When author Ben Mears comes to town (after briefly living there during his childhood) to work on his new novel. However, Ben isn’t the only new arrival in town as the ancient (and possibly haunted) Marsten House has two mysterious new inhabitants who have sinister plans for th...

The Invisible Man (2020)

Image
In a couple of days I will be seeing Spiral: From the Book of Saw in a movie theater (hooray for vaccinations!). I’m really excited to recline in those beautiful leather seats and let the experience take me. It’s only right that the film I’m covering this week, the 2020 version of The Invisible Man , was the last movie I saw in a theater. The Invisible Man was written and directed by Leigh Whannell ( Saw ) and is based on the novel of the same name by H.G. Wells ( The War of the Worlds ). The Invisible Man was made on a budget of $7 million, made $28,205,665 upon opening, and went on to make $143,151,000 worldwide. The Invisible Man was released on February 28th, 2020 to extremely positive reviews. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was released digitally just three weeks after being released theatrically. The Invisible Man follows Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale ) after she leaves her abusive boyfriend Adrian (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, The Haunting of Hill House )...

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Image
“When there is no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth.” The original Dawn of the Dead is a classic and Zack Snyder ( Man of Steel ) is one of my least favorite working directors. Those are two pretty big things hanging over this film, but it’s actually great. I first saw this film in high school, prepared to hate it, and ended up really loving it. Dawn of the Dead was written by James Gunn ( Guardians of the Galaxy ) and directed by Snyder. It was made on a budget of $26 million, made $26,722,575 upon opening, and went on to make $102,278,712 worldwide. It was released on March 19th, 2004 and received mixed to positive reviews. Like the original film, Dawn of the Dead follows a group of survivors of a zombie outbreak who take shelter in a mall and attempt to build a new life there while evading the horrors outside. While the original featured only four survivors, this version features a far larger group. The expanded ensemble works both for and against the fil...
